Pro tips most people miss

The protractor cursor snaps its plane to whatever face or axis is under your mouse before you click the center point. This is where beginners get a wrong rotation: the rotation plane is set the moment you place the pivot, not when you start dragging. Hold Shift to lock the protractor onto the plane it is currently showing, then move the mouse freely to pick a pivot anywhere without the plane snapping to other geometry.

You can also force the rotation axis with the arrow keys instead of fighting the inference: tap the Right arrow to lock the red axis, Up arrow for the blue (vertical) axis, and Left arrow for the green axis — the protractor turns the matching colour. A lesser-known trick: while Shift is held to keep the locked angle, press Alt (Windows) or Command (Mac) to release the protractor from the inferenced plane while keeping the same tilt, so you can re-base it on another piece of geometry.

To make a copy instead of moving the original, tap Ctrl (Alt on Mac) once after grabbing the object — a “+” appears on the cursor. After placing one rotated copy, you do not have to repeat it by hand: type 5x (or *5) to repeat that exact angle five times for a radial array, or type /12 to evenly divide the swept angle into 12 equally spaced copies — a fast way to build clock faces, fan blades, or columns around a circle.

Finally, the value box keeps listening after the rotation finishes: as long as you have not started another action, you can type a new angle and press Enter again to overwrite the last one. Negative numbers reverse the direction, and you can append deg for degrees or r to enter a slope as rise/run if you need precision.
