Loose To Groups Plugin is an Extension of Sketchup software that automatically creates separate groups from loose geometries. This plugin is rarely used, but in some cases it is very necessary.

When to use the Loose To Groups Plugin

• When need to create automatically Group group. For example, if you drew 10 boxs and needed to create 10 groups, this is very necessary.
• With furniture CNC production with the ABF plugin only running with Group, this is the time you need.
• The real reason this plugin exists: SketchUp has no native command to split disconnected geometry back into separate groups. If you select a pile of 10 detached boxes and choose Make Group, you get one group containing all of them — not 10. And if you Explode a group that held 10 separate solids, you get a single mess of loose edges and faces, not 10 groups back. This plugin walks the loose geometry, finds each set of connected faces/edges, and wraps each one in its own group automatically.

Why this matters for ABF CNC nesting

• ABF (and most nesting workflows) treat each Group/Component as one cuttable part. Loose, ungrouped faces are invisible to nesting or get merged wrongly, so panels that share an edge or sit coplanar will silently fuse into one oversized part on the cut sheet if you nest them as raw geometry. Wrapping each panel in its own group keeps part boundaries intact.
• A subtle gotcha worth knowing: two faces only count as the “same” group when their edges actually touch. If two boards are perfectly coplanar and edge-to-edge, SketchUp may stitch them into one connected web, and Loose To Groups will hand you a single group for both. Leave a hairline gap (even 0.1 mm) between parts you want kept separate, or move one part off the shared plane before running the tool — this is the most common cause of “two parts merged into one group.”
