Revit find and replace is built in for one job: text notes. Autodesk’s Find/Replace tool searches notes and detail groups in the current selection, the current view or the entire project, and it does not recognise parameter-based text such as tag values, or text in schedules (Autodesk help). Sheet names, view names, type and family names and parameter values need another route: renaming one item at a time, a script, or an add-in. This page sorts what the native tool covers from what add-ins and scripts cover, with scope, limits, price and Revit versions as each vendor’s own page prints them.
Disclosure: 3dshouse makes Metasheet, one of the tools below. It gets the same fields as the others, limits included. Pages were opened in November 2026, and prices carry that date. Where a page does not state something, the text says so; that means the page is silent, not that the tool lacks the feature.
Revit find and replace: what the built-in tool covers
The tool is the Find/Replace button on the Annotate tab, Text panel (Autodesk, Find and Replace Text in a Text Note). It is documented as far back as the Revit 2014 help (Autodesk, Revit 2014); I did not find which release introduced it.
- Click Find/Replace, type the text in Find and the new text in Replace with.
- Set the scope: Current Selection, Current View or Entire Project.
- Click Find Next or Find All. The results table shows Match, Found in and View Type, and a Context field for the highlighted row.
- Click Replace for one instance, or Replace All for every instance in the scope.
The limits are what send people to add-ins:
- Only text created with the Text tool. Parameter-based text, such as a tag value, and text in schedules are not recognised (Autodesk).
- Detail group text can be replaced only through Edit Group, and the change applies to every instance of that group.
- Keynotes are excluded in the Revit 2014 help (Autodesk).
- It does not touch sheet names, view names, type names or parameter values at all.
For those, native Revit means one item at a time. A sheet is renamed in the Project Browser (right-click Rename, or select and press F2) or by editing Sheet Number and Sheet Name on the Properties palette, and Autodesk notes the change “is propagated throughout the project” (Autodesk, Rename a Sheet). A view is renamed with right-click Rename, or under Identity Data in its Properties (Autodesk, Revit 2014 page). I found no Autodesk page that describes a bulk replace for either.

The tools, one by one
ModPlus: Search and replace
The broadest free option I found. The ModPlus page says “It’s a free plugin!”, lists version 2.17.7.0 dated 20.10.2026 and gives no Revit years. It searches text notes and text annotations, type and instance parameters (leave the parameter blank to search all editable string parameters), sheet numbers, viewport view names, generic annotations, materials, schedule names and headers, filters, fill pattern names and dimensions, per its changelog. Comparison modes are Normal, Mask (wildcards *, ?, #) and Regular expression, with Case sensitive, Whole Word, Search by selected elements and Search empty values options. Limit: the page lists sheet numbers but not sheet names, and no type or family names, so check those on a copy first.
pyRevit
pyRevit is open source (GPL-3.0 on its GitHub page), and its Drawing Set panel ships rename buttons. Reading the scripts: Rename Selected Sheets (source folder) changes the sheet name of the sheets you select, with Find & Replace (plain text, no regex), Add Prefix, Add Suffix, UPPERCASE and lowercase. It previews up to 25 changes, skips targets that duplicate another name, and runs in one transaction using temporary names first. Rename Selected Views (source folder) only changes case in the version I read; it has no find and replace. The pages state no Revit versions. The same folder holds Increment and Decrement Selected Sheet Numbers, a first step if you need renumbering rather than renaming.
DiRootsOne
A bundle of tools with a free tier and a premium tier. The product page lists €100 per user per year, US$120 for US clients via ATG USA, and compatibility with Revit 2018 to 2027. Three parts matter here. ViewManager renames views in batch with a prefix, a suffix, and a find-and-replace pair (DiRoots docs); the same page set covers view templates. FamilyReviser renames families and adds prefixes and suffixes. OneParameter edits instance and type parameter values in bulk and lists Find & Replace and prefixes/suffixes (OneParameter page). The free tier includes ViewManager and FamilyReviser, some of whose features are premium-only, and excludes OneParameter. The pages do not say which tier the view rename sits in.
Ideate SheetManager
Part of the IdeateApps collection. Its Rename function batch-modifies view or sheet names and numbers, with a Find/Replace option (Ideate page). The example swaps “Dependent 1” names for a scope box name. The page names no price and no Revit versions; the IdeateApps page lists a subscription and a free trial, and the rename page says users on Revit 2022 or earlier should contact support.
BIM Bulk Rename and Renamer: free Autodesk App Store add-ins
BIM Bulk Rename by NEXORA is free. Its listing lists views, sheets, schedules, families, types, materials and filters, with prefix, suffix, find and replace, regex, auto-numbering, case transformation, conflict detection, live preview and exportable logs. It does not mention parameters, and states no Revit versions.
Renamer by FORMlab is free. The listing describes picking a category, entering text to find and optional replacement text, and a Preview before you apply; it names views, sheets, walls and ceilings. It states no Revit versions.
Magic Rename Tool and Rockit: paid add-ins
Magic Rename Tool (Pangolin tools) covers families, family types, views, sheets, schedules, levels, filters, rooms, spaces and scope boxes, with find and replace and numbering rules. The only source I opened is a November 2021 blog post; I found no current listing with a price or supported Revit versions. Rockit (Rock CAD Support) costs US$15.00 a month with a 30-day trial; its Autodesk App Store listing lists Bulk Rename for views or sheets with find and replace, prefix and suffix, and says its parameters manager renames shared and project parameters. That is the parameter definition, not the values in each element.
ModPlus Batch Rename: inside families
A different job: it batch-renames parameter names, type names and parameter values in specified families. Free, version 1.4.2.0 dated 24.09.2026, no Revit years on the page.
Dynamo and Python scripts
When no add-in fits, a script can do any replacement. A tutorial on automating BIM tasks makes three points that apply to any script: a view collector returns schedules, legends, sheets-as-views and templates, so filter by ViewType or IsTemplate before looping; names and sheet numbers must stay unique because Revit rejects duplicates; and the change must run inside a transaction. Test on a copy.
Metasheet (ours)
Metasheet is a Revit add-in (Revit 2022 to 2027) that shows a collection as a spreadsheet: one row per element, one column per parameter. Find and replace is one of two bulk tools in it, and it works on a column, not on the whole model. This is what the code does:
- Collections. Drawing Sheets, Views, View Templates, Levels, Grids, Rooms, Materials, every model category that has elements in the project (instances and family types), schedules, and text, dimension and filled region styles.
- Find/Replace. You choose one editable column, a Find string and a Replace string. Plain text by default; a switch treats Find as a regex, which is case-sensitive unless you start with
(?i). There is no whole-word or case option. Empty Find is refused. - Prefix/Suffix. Adds text to the start or end of every non-empty cell in the column.
- Visible rows only. Rows hidden by the Filter rows box are skipped, so a filter works as your selection.
- Staged, not applied. The tool writes into the grid and reports “Staged N edits”. Nothing reaches Revit until you click Apply; Discard clears the staged edits.
- Collisions. For Sheet Number, Sheet Name, Type Name, Family Name and Mark, a swap or shift (A-101 to A-102 and back) is resolved with temporary names inside the transaction; two rows aimed at the same new value are reported as failures. View Name is written directly, without the temporary-name pass, so swapping two view names is not covered.
- One transaction. Apply runs as one Revit transaction. Cells Revit rejects (duplicate value, locked parameter) come back as a per-cell failure list while the rest commits; a document-level error rolls everything back.
What it does not do: it does not edit the content of text notes or tag text. The Name column of element instances is read-only, so you cannot rename individual instances (Mark and other parameters are editable). A replace never creates rows or columns; adding a parameter stays in Revit.
Cost. Everything is free to use with a free 3dshouse account, asked for at the first Apply. Viewing, filtering, editing in the grid and Export XLSX are never counted. Each Apply that writes at least one edit to the model counts as one use, with 3 free uses per UTC day; Pro removes the limit.
How to bulk replace names and values, step by step
Sheet names and view names
- Save a copy of the project, or sync and be ready to use Undo. Bulk tools write many names at once.
- Narrow the set: select the sheets or views, or filter. Views include templates, schedules and legends in many collectors.
- Run Find with a specific string. A string like “Level 1” is safer than “1”.
- Read the preview or staged list before applying.
- Apply, then check the failure list: duplicate names are the usual rejection.
In Metasheet: open Drawing Sheets or Views in the sidebar, click Bulk Edit, pick the Sheet Name or View Name column, enter Find and Replace, click Find & Replace, review the staged cells, then Apply.
Tags and schedule text
Tag text and schedule cells are parameter values, which Revit’s Find/Replace skips. Change the parameter the tag or schedule reads instead: with a parameter-aware tool (ModPlus Search and replace, DiRoots OneParameter, Metasheet) or by editing the schedule’s source parameter. ModPlus also lists schedule names and headers as search areas. For a spreadsheet-style editor, see our comparison of Revit spreadsheet editors.
How to choose
- Text notes only: Revit’s own Find/Replace.
- Free, names across many categories: BIM Bulk Rename (regex is listed) or Renamer; ModPlus Search and replace for parameters and annotations.
- Sheet names only, free: pyRevit.
- Replace in a column of parameters and see all values before applying: a grid such as Metasheet, with staged edits you can discard.
- Renumbering sheets in a sequence is a separate job from replacing text in names.
What I could not check
I searched for BIM One and Naviate rename tools and found no vendor page, so neither is covered. The Autodesk Ideas thread asking Find/Replace to cover view names, sheet names and schedules answered 403, so it is not quoted. Autodesk and vendor pages change; confirm prices on the vendor page before buying.
FAQ
How do I find and replace text in a Revit schedule?
Revit’s Find/Replace does not recognise text in schedules (Autodesk help). Edit the parameter the schedule column reads, using a tool that works on parameters: ModPlus Search and replace lists schedule names and headers as search areas, and DiRoots OneParameter and Metasheet edit parameter values in bulk.
How do I find and replace a view name in Revit?
Native Revit renames one view at a time (right-click Rename, or Identity Data in Properties). For many views, use an add-in with find and replace on view names: DiRoots ViewManager, Ideate SheetManager, BIM Bulk Rename, Renamer, Rockit, Magic Rename Tool or Metasheet.
How do I find and replace a sheet name in Revit?
Native Revit renames a sheet in the Project Browser (right-click Rename, or F2) or on the Properties palette. For bulk changes, pyRevit’s Rename Selected Sheets does find and replace on sheet names, and the add-ins above that cover sheets do the same.
Can Revit find and replace tags?
Not directly. Autodesk states that parameter-based text, such as a tag value, is not recognised by Find/Replace. Change the parameter that the tag displays instead.
How do I batch rename views in Revit?
Select the views, apply a prefix, suffix or find-and-replace in a tool that supports it, check for duplicate names, and apply. Filter out view templates, schedules and legends first. Tools that list view renaming are in the table above.
Can I find and replace family or type names in Revit?
Revit’s Find/Replace cannot. BIM Bulk Rename, Magic Rename Tool, DiRoots FamilyReviser and Metasheet list family or type names; ModPlus Batch Rename works on names inside specified families.
Is there a free Revit find and replace tool?
Yes: ModPlus Search and replace, pyRevit, BIM Bulk Rename and Renamer are free per their pages. Metasheet has a free tier of 3 Applies per UTC day.
Free: limited to 3 applies a day
Pro: unlimited, guaranteed to work, priority support
